Teatr im. Jana Kochanowskiego w obecnej lokalizacji i pod obecną nazwą działa od 1975 roku. Ale zawodowy polski teatr w Opolu istniał już od 1945 roku jako Teatr Miejski im. Juliusza Słowackiego. W opolskim teatrze dramatycznym funkcjonują cztery sceny. Każdego roku odbywa się tu kilka premier, wystawiane są też sztuki zewnętrzne. Od 1975 roku, corocznie opolski teatr organizuje jeden z największych festiwali w Polsce - Opolskie Konfrontacje Teatralne „Klasyka Polska”. Najważniejszy przegląd inscenizacji klasycznych polskich dramatów, podczas którego na scenie opolskiego teatru goszczą najlepsze spektakle z całego kraju, rywalizujące o Grand Prix i szereg nagród. Od 2015 roku Konfrontacje są finałem całorocznego Konkursu na Inscenizację Dawnych Dzieł Literatury Polskiej „Klasyka Żywa”, ogólnopolskiego przedsięwzięcia, którego celem jest docenienie inscenizacji polskich utworów oraz wzmocnienie zainteresowania twórców dawną literaturą.
